“You know, when you are in love, in a nightclub, but you are not in the right place, the person is not there?” mused Alessandro Michelle, in a backstage preview, minutes before models graced the runway of his SS 17 show. Oh: So we’re speaking of being all dressed up, yet brokenhearted at the same time? Cue a tiered evening dress that had a giant red embroidered heart, pierced with a jeweled dagger on the front, and the numerals “XXV” above it, which is Michele’s lucky number. This dagger in heart motif made its way onto sweaters and sweatshirts in the show rooms, in the way Gucci so cleverly disseminates their runway shows into ready-to wear pieces.
We continue to be dazzled by Alessandro Michele’s new Gucci, a phantasmagoria of vintage 20th-century pop-culture references, bound up with relics of the Renaissance for this particular collection. There were brocades, pearls, bows and ruffles galore, in the poppiest of bright colours. Gucci as always, is not for the faint of heart.
