“Trends come and go, but iconic pieces are forever.” Olivier Rousteing
For the Balmain Pre Fall 2018 collection, Olivier Rousteing focused on “timeless” and quintessentially Balmain staples like sparkly tweed knits, and strong-shouldered jackets crystal-embroidered all layered over destroyed branded band T-shirts. Fabrics this season included metallics, patent leather, and fine crystal applications to mimic the Milky Way. Just heaven.
“Trends come and go, but iconic pieces are forever. Right now, I’m more into the idea of having a timeless collection — pieces you could see in a museum in 50 years and say, that’s Balmain,” Rousteing said.
Olivier electrified the collection with zigzag motifs and chevron patterns – a nod to dialed up Ziggy Stardust. This all played out as fresh velvet versions of his maximalist rock star jackets, which were paired with embellished concert tees, and strass-studded velvet leggings and or patent jeans.
Dialing down into more commercial territory was also beautifully wearable Prince of Wales suiting and herringbone cotton tweeds.
